i think i've put all my creative energy over the last couple of years into figuring out how to survive as an actual, bona fide adult outside the confines of one educational compound or another. seriously, from the age of three to the age of twenty-eight i was in school: kindergarten, grade school, high school, college, taught school, law school. those rhythms and norms are much softer, much simpler than the unrelenting pace of Life In The Real World.
turns out i'm pretty ambivalent about The Real World. about half the time i'm like a fish out of water, thinking "throw me back! throw me back!"
but the other half of the time it turns out i'm not bad at it. i'm an attorney, and it feels good to be the one they're talking about when they say "send lawyers, guns, and money." (ok, not literally, but you know what i mean.)
i'm still finding my way through. maybe in a couple more years i'll find my way back into the ivory tower-- go teach law school, or maybe a high school english class. but for now, it's ok to get up at the break of dawn and run the engines til they rattle. it's good to get my teeth into something.

How you love to find your tongue in his teeth,
in a struggle to find sacred songs that you keep
wrapped in boxes so tight,
sounding only at night as you sleep.
